Last updated: 24th July 2019

It’s a new type of product and we’re dubious about a lot of the claims the manufacturers make. They promise to ‘alleviate your fatigue levels, improve your motivation and help you beat the competition by thinking faster and simply going for longer.

If such a product existed, I think we would all take it! While we think some of the marketing is bluster, it doesn’t mean that some of the ingredients could have a positive effect on a woman’s brain power. Like most supplements, nootropics are made from ingredients derived from plants, a lot of which can be found in food.

The difference is the doses. Taking supplements can provide you with a bigger boost than you’d find in you breakfast, lunch and evening meal, and could have a positive result. We’d encourage you to check the suppliers website to make sure any claims can be verified by proper research.

To help save you some time we’ve set our minds to the task of picking the best products available for women right now. So if you are looking for more information on nootropics for women, start reading below.

Hunter Focus

The number 1 Nootropic 2019

Editor’s Choice

Overview

Finding it hard to keep motivated in the modern world? You’re not alone. Millions of women juggle their career, family and social lives and, as a result, your concentration and focus can suffer.

Nootropics can help.

Known as ‘smart pills’, this is a fairly new type of supplement that promises to sharpen your mind and eliminate brain fog. Where other supplements have targeted your physical health, these home in on your mental fitness and promise to help you get an edge on other women your age with a combination of natural brain boosting ingredients.

Hunter Focus is one of the newest nootropics on the market, and while it’s aimed mainly at men, women can benefit too. In fact, due to hormonal differences, we’re more sensitive to the effects of anxiety and stress than men. With this in mind a stress-busting nootropic like Hunter Focus can suit women perfectly. We’ve taken a look inside the bottle to see what Hunter Focus is made of.

What’s in it?

A glance at the ingredients list shows the bods at Hunter haven’t cut any corners when making Hunter Focus. It contains a list of high-grade ingredients which are scientifically proven to have brain boosting benefits. Studies have shown phosphatidylserine can improve the function of nerves in your brain, allowing you to think faster and bacopa monnieri can reduce stress and boost your memory. These main ingredients are 100% natural and safe, with no side effects. Hunter Focus also contains lion’s mane mushroom which can stimulate the growth of brain cells and ashwagandha extract which has multiple medicinal uses, with improved cognitive ability being a key one.

How to take it

Simply take two capsules of Hunter Focus with a glass of water, twice a day. As with any supplement, to get the full effect make sure you take it consistently as part of a good exercise regime.

Cons
  • Premium price for a premium product
  • Not suitable for vegans or vegetarians
  • Only available from official website

Conclusion

It’s no secret that modern life is incredibly hectic and stressful. As a woman, stress and anxiety can have a big impact on your day-to-day. Nootropics can certainly help clear the fog and provide clarity, as well as providing a powerful boost to your mood. We’d highly recommend Hunter Focus based on an incredible (and proven) range of natural ingredients at higher doses than you’ll find in competitor products.

Mind Lab Pro

Overview

In the modern world, the self-care movement means many of us are putting time aside to make sure we eat the right foods and do enough exercise to keep our bodies healthy and in shape. But why don’t we pay the same amount of attention to our minds?

How you treat your mental health and wellbeing are just as important as how you treat your body. Luckily, many supplement companies are now taking this into account and are providing a range of brain boosting supplements.

Mind Lab Pro are one such provider and have used the latest science and research to develop their Universal Nootropic, a dietary supplement with a tonic of ingredients to help you think clearer, focus for longer and excel in every area of your life. Mind Lab Pro state this product will deliver ‘100% brainpower’ and we’ve taken a look at the ingredients to see if it delivers results.

What’s in it?

If you’re going to take nootropics, you need to be assured that the ingredients are safe and natural with absolutely no side effects. We’re glad to report that Mind Lab Pro ticks these boxes and is meticulously researched by nutrition experts and neuroscientists. Mind Lab Pro contains phosphatidylserine – a heavily researched nootropic which increases the flexibility of brain cell membranes. Lion’s mane mushroom will promote brain plasticity and improve your overall brain health. It also includes bacopa monnieri, known to increase blood flow to the brain which can help you focus and study for longer.

How to take it

Simply take two Mind Lap Pro capsules once a day with a glass of water, preferably with a meal. You may build up a slight tolerance, so it’s advised to take another two, up to a maximum of four capsules in any 24 hour period. Don’t exceed this dose.

Cons
  • May need to be cycled if you build up a resistance
  • Only available direct from Mind Lab Pro

Conclusion

If you’re lacking mental energy and struggle to get ‘in the zone’ when you need to the most, we’d recommend a nootropic like Mind Lap Pro. They’ve gone to great lengths to develop a high performing formula and the list of ingredients are tried and tested across the industry. Definitely one to consider.

Performance Lab Mind

Overview

What would you do if you could harness the hidden power within your brain to outperform your female (and male) competition? If such a pill existed, would you buy it? Well nootropics are here and they do just that. Performance Lab Mind is an ‘advanced brain supplement’ which can upgrade your mental software to kick your cognitive ability into overdrive, pushing you harder than you’ve ever thought possible. It does this by using a blend of natural ingredients, scientifically backed and highly-researched, to deliver a spark of new brain energy. We’ve taken a look to see if this particular nootropic is effective for women and exactly how the ingredients work.

What’s in it?

Phosphatidylserine is found naturally in the body but the highest concentrations will be found in your brain. The boost within the supplement will help improve your mental function, fight aging and prevent decline. Maritime Pine Bark Extract can also aid blood flow and help reverse many of the effects aging has on your brain. These key ingredients will help you recover faster from any mental activity and vitally, perform for longer than your competition.

How to take it

Performance Lab recommend you take 1-2 capsules of Mind with your first meal of the day, ideally with a source of dietary fat to aid absorption. As with any supplement, you have to take it regularly or you aren’t going to get the advertised benefits.

Cons
  • Slightly expensive

Conclusion

We really like the Performance Lab Mind nootropic, though we think there are probably better options on the market in terms of price. Performance wise, it’s a great choice. It contains an effective selection of ingredients and is completely free of nasty side effects or proprietary blends.

Alpha Brain

Overview

Perhaps the best-known nootropic stack, Alpha Brain is made by US-based Onnit. The brand website cites clinical studies to highlight Alpha Brain’s ability to help “healthy individuals” enhance their memories, processing speed and ability to focus. The product is endorsed by Joe Rogan – a standup comedian and podcast host. But this isn’t a ‘male’ product – it also counts Michelle Waterson (UFC fighter) among its female users. Alpha Brain is free from caffeine and gluten.

What’s in it?

Alpha Brain contains a number of proven nootropic ingredients, as well as some that aren’t as well-researched. L-tyrosine is an amino acid that improves cognition under pressure, while L-theanine is a calming agent helps reduce stress. Oat straw extract is also thought to reduce anxiety, although this ingredient remains understudied. Cat’s claw is also under researched, but is said to help improve mood, cognition and focus. Alpha-GPC, bacopa and huperzia serrata extract have all been shown to make your mind sharper, while also boosting mental energy. L-leucine is the primary branched-chain amino acid and plays a key role in lifting your mood during your monthly cycle. Although not subject to the same level of research as some other ingredients in this formula, pterostilbene is thought to improve learning by promoting neuroplasticity.

How to take it

Alpha Brain comes in bottles of 30 or 90 capsules. In either case, the serving size is two capsules per day. While the manufacturer’s instructions don’t tell you when to take each serving, we recommend that you take one capsule with food, twice a day. Splitting the serving helps you assess your tolerance to the ingredients, while also helping to keep your mind sharp throughout the day.

Cons
  • Some ingredients aren’t as well-researched as others
  • Hidden dosage information – no way of knowing whether it contains enough of certain ingredients to be effective
  • Vitamin B6 is widely available as part of a healthy nutrition plan

Conclusion

Alpha Brain is pretty good. It contains bacopa, L-theanine and L-tyrosine – all of which we love to see in a high-quality product in this category. It’s also free of caffeine – which is wonderful news if you’re sensitive to stimulants. On a less positive note, Alpha Brain also contains a number of under-researched ingredients, with the likes of oat straw extract and cat’s claw lacking the same high level of scientific backing as some others on the list. So it may boast some celebrity endorsements – but Alpha Brain isn’t the greatest pre-made nootropic for women. That said, Onnit’s flagship product comes in 30-capsule bottles (as well as 45-capsule bottles). This makes it a relatively inexpensive way to dip your toe into the world of nootropics – and we recommend it.

OptiMind

Overview

Promising to “unleash your mind”, Optimind is designed to help you increase mental energy, become more alert, sharpen your ability to focus and enhance your powers of recall. While not as familiar to us as some other pre-made nootropics, Optimind boasts many glowing reviews from women across the web and has featured in Vice and Elite Daily. To help protect your health, safety and comfort, Optimind is made to strict GMP standards in the USA. What’s more, it’s suitable for vegetarians and is certified free from gluten and preservatives.

What’s in it?

Optimind contains bacopa monnieri, a perennial herb shown to improve memory and reduce stress – which makes it great for those when you have a lot to do and feel under pressure. Research from Cornell University shows L-taurine increases GABA levels to further reduce stress, while phosphatidylserine influences cortisol levels to enhance the calming effects of L-taurine. Caffeine is a popular stimulant that improves attention, while L-tyrosine boosts your ability to recall information under stressful conditions. Alpha lipoic acid reduces inflammation to enhance your long-term memory, and huperzine A and sulbutiamine are all thought to heighten your ability to recall information.

How to take it

Each bottle of Optimind contains 32 capsules and this equates to 16 servings per container. According to the manufacturer’s directions, you start with one-two capsules in the morning. It goes on to say that you should not take more than five capsules in a 24-hour period. We’d advise taking each capsule with food to help your absorb all the nutrients.

Cons
  • Only 32 capsules per bottle – only lasts 16 days or less
  • Proprietary blend – gives you no way of knowing if dosages are effective for women
  • Some ingredients aren’t as well studied as others

Conclusion

While not the best pre-made nootropic we’ve ever seen, Optimind is inexpensive and contains some proven ingredients (and others which are promising). Some of the ingredients are understudied, but that’s typical for a product in this price range. And while we listed its 32-capsule bottles as a negative, the 16-day course may be a good way to try nootropics before you move on to something stronger – give it a go and see what you think.
